[Local Guide] The Fieldwork of Gastronomy: Why iDeats Lab. is Serious About Google Local Guides

iDA eats - Local guide on Google Maps

The main theme of iDeats Lab. is “Meats & Gears.” Using a scientific approach to cook the perfect steak in my home dining room and pairing it with supreme whiskey—that is my ultimate creative outlet.

However, to recreate a flawless dish at home, there is an absolutely essential process. That is to experience the “authentic correct answers” created by professionals with my own palate and eyes. In other words, “input” (fieldwork) through dining out.

At iDeats Lab., I publicly share the records of this gastronomic exploration—earned on foot—as a Google Maps “Local Guide.”

Why Google Maps? (Giving Back & A Global Perspective)

There are countless platforms for finding restaurants and bars. So why am I so seriously committed to being a Google Maps Local Guide? There are two clear reasons.

1. “Giving Back” to the Review Culture

Whenever I search for a truly great restaurant in an unfamiliar city, I am always saved by the Google Maps reviews and photos of unnamed predecessors. As a way of giving back, I strongly wanted to help someone looking for a place to eat tonight by leaving behind my “technique for capturing sizzling photos” and “objective reviews.”

2. A Guidepost for Inbound Tourists and Overseas Friends

I often have the opportunity to work with foreign colleagues and clients. When I tried to send them a link to “the most recommended ramen shop in Tokyo,” I noticed that there were extremely few English reviews.
For inbound tourists and overseas friends who want to experience authentic Japanese local gourmet, I realized that “overwhelming photos” and “reviews mixed with English” that transcend language barriers are highly valuable as a practical guide.

150,000 Views in 1 Month: The Proven Secret of “Sizzle”

Driven by these pure motives, in February 2026, just before the launch of iDeats Lab., I quietly started posting on Google Maps.

As a result, in just one month since opening, my posts and photos have recorded an astonishing total of 150,000 views.

This number is by no means my own achievement. I consider it the result of Google’s algorithm and the behavioral data of users searching for restaurants proving a single “truth.”

The photos that people are unconsciously drawn to are not beautiful pictures taken with expensive equipment. Rather, they are the ones that capture the “temperature” and “smell” of the location, and the “heat” of the exact moment you are about to eat—a single photo with true “sizzle.”

Never-Ending Fieldwork

If the iDeats Lab. blog is my “research presentation venue,” then my Google Maps Local Guide is my “gastronomic field notebook” (database) that I update daily.

What will I cook next? What kind of liquor will I drink? The sources of my inspiration are all in this map.

If you are ever lost when choosing a place for dinner tonight or a special weekend meal, or if you are simply interested in the trajectory of my inputs, please take a look at my Google Maps account from the link below.

While it’s still a new account and the total number of posts isn’t huge yet, I am certain you will encounter that “sizzle” that strongly stimulates your appetite.
